GMC Truck Towing Guide – Crestmont Buick GMC
GMC Truck Towing Guide – Crestmont Buick GMC

GMC was originally founded exclusively as a truck brand. And while the brand expanded its range of offerings pretty early on, trucks still form the brand’s backbone. This is why GMC goes the extra mile to make sure the trucks that wear the GMC badge are the best around. But GMC has a whole range of trucks, and while it might be clear what sets them apart from the rest of the truck market, it might not be quite so clear what sets them apart from one another. Since towing capacity is such an important distinction from one model to another, we put together this guide to help you pick the right truck for your towing needs.

GMC Canyon Towing
The smallest truck in the GMC fleet is big on capability. The turbocharged TurboMax™ engine produces more power than you’re probably used to seeing in a midsize truck, especially when it comes to torque. That’s good, because torque is important to a good towing rating, and the 7,700-pound towing capacity that comes with all that torque shows why the Canyon is the way to go for a capable midsize truck. If you want to go offroading, the Canyon AT4 comes with a ton of standard offroading equipment as standard, all without compromising a single pound of towing capacity. Or if you want a luxury experience, the Denali can deliver that, and again with that same towing capacity.
Engine | Horsepower | Torque | Max Towing Capacity |
TurboMax | 310 | 430 lb-ft | 7,700 pounds |

GMC Sierra 1500 Towing Capacity
For more capability and more versatility, the GMC Sierra 1500 remains a hugely popular truck. One of the only light-duty pickups available with a diesel engine, the Sierra 1500 is clearly built with towing in mind. And while the diesel option is the natural choice for anyone who needs to do a lot of towing, all of the engines offered in the Sierra 1500 come with excellent towing capability. In fact, if you want more horsepower, there is even an option for a 420-horsepower gasoline V8 that offers a nearly identical towing capacity to the diesel, but with a much quicker 0-60 time. And if you want to kick back and relax while you tow, the Denali Ultimate trim comes with standard Super Cruise hands-free driving on compatible highways.
Engine | Horsepower | Torque | Max Towing Capacity |
TurboMax™ | 310 | 430 lb-ft | 9,500 pounds |
5.3L V8 | 355 | 383 lb-ft | 11,200 pounds |
6.2L V8 | 420 | 460 lb-ft | 13,000 pounds |
DURAMAX 3.0L Turbo Diesel | 305 | 495 lb-ft | 13,200 pounds |

GMC Sierra HD Towing Capacity
The GMC Sierra HD is the truck for when you have serious towing needs. Able to far exceed what is possible with a smaller truck, the Sierra HD, when equipped with the 6.6-liter diesel V8 and a fifth wheel, is capable of towing up to 36,000 pounds. The Sierra HD also has a bigger bed (by volume) than any of its few competitors. There is a choice of two V8 engines, both of them 6.6 liters. The diesel, with its massive torque output, is the preferred choice for serious towing, but the towing capacity with the gasoline V8 is still a significant bump up from even the most powerful engines in the Sierra 1500. But like the smaller Sierra 1500, the Sierra HD comes in a wide variety of trims that include the AT4 and AT4X offroad trims, as well as the Denali and Denali Ultimate luxury trims.
Engine | Horsepower | Torque | Max Towing Capacity |
6.6L V8 Gas | 401 | 464 lb-ft | 21,600 pounds |
6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8 | 470 | 975 lb-ft | 36,000 pounds |

GMC Hummer EV Towing Capacity
The GMC Hummer EV is built for offroad performance, but another byproduct of the incredible power it produces is an impressive towing capacity. The all-electric drivetrain is available with either 2 or 3 motors. With two motors, it can produce up to 570 horsepower and 7,400 lb-ft of torque, with a range of 318 miles. Move up to the 3-motor version and you get 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 lb-ft of torque, with 367 miles of range. Interestingly, it’s the two-motor drivetrain that gives you the best towing capacity, 12,000 pounds. The three-motor will tow 8,500 pounds. With features like CrabWalk diagonal driving and the huge power output, towing isn’t necessarily the first thing you think of with the Hummer EV, but the truth is it offers one of the highest towing capacities of any electric vehicle on the market.
Engine | Horsepower | Torque | Max Towing Capacity |
Dual EV | 570 | 7,400 lb-ft | 12,000 pounds |
Triple EV | 1,000 | 11,500 lb-ft | 8,500 pounds |

GMC Sierra EV Denali Towing Capacity
The forthcoming Sierra EV Denali is a more practical alternative to the Hummer EV, one that focuses more on traditional pickup duties. So, while it doesn’t come with as much power as the Hummer EV, it beats nearly every other truck out there, with up to 760 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque. It also has a range of up to 460 miles, making it a much more practical EV for towing, and when it does, it will tow up to 10,500 pounds. There’s only one trim, hence “Denali” being included right in the model name. And that means you’re in for a luxury experience in Sierra EV Denali, with premium materials, Air Ride Adaptive Suspension, a panoramic glass roof, and even Super Cruise, all as standard equipment.
